Fraud Advice |

Good Morning Resident
We are all plagued by fraudsters calling us on the phone and trying to convince us to hand over our hard-earned money! There have been occasions when fraudsters have claimed to be police officers, to trick people into giving them personal information and to defraud them financially. Do you know how to check an officer’s identity? Ask for the caller to provide their name, rank and collar number. Tell them you are going to confirm that they are a genuine caller. Hang up the phone and make a brew, let the dog out or check your social media, anything which will pass five minutes by. There have been cases where a fraudster has been able to keep the phone line open. Call 101, speak to our control room and ask them to confirm that the officer is genuine. Advise our operator of the reason the person called you and they will be able to guide you as to whether it was a scam call, or a genuine officer trying to speak to you. If you want to find out more about scams, check out our website at https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/fa/fraud/ You can also speak to a fraud ambassador at our regular Community Connection events within our local banks. More information is available here: https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/area/your-area/north-yorkshire/ryedale-whitby-and-scarborough
Kind Regards
